  • Note:Brief Summary:

Fragments of Buddhist cave temple frescoes from the German Turfan expeditions to Xinjiang, China, brought to the Museum für Völkerkunde, Berlin, by Albert von Le Coq (1860-1930) between 1902 and 1914, and photographed in situ for the Führerprojekt during the Second World War by Otto Cürlis,1943/1945. The museum and many of the frescoes were destroyed by Allied bombing shortly after they were photographed, while others that had been moved elsewhere for safekeeping were lost or taken to Saint Petersburg during the Russian occupation. Surviving frescoes are in the Museum für Asiatische Kunst in Berlin.

    Biographical/Historical Note:

Slides are part of the larger 'Führerprojekt' set that came to the Gallery in 1951 by way of publisher Kurt Wolff.

    Geographical/Historical Note:

Turfan is an archaeological site in a fertile oasis along the ancient silk routes of central Asia. It is presently in the Uyghur Autonomous Region of Xinjiang of the People's Republic of China. Linking China to western and northern Asia and Europe, these commercial routes fostered major cultural exchange and development in Turfan and other important trade centers that rose along the Silk Road.

    Filing Location and Arrangement:
