    Brief Summary:

The "Art International" magazine image collection was acquired by the National Gallery of Art from its founder and publisher James Fitzsimmons in seven installments between 1976 and 1983. From 1956 to 1984, the magazine covered the diverse movements, artists, and current exhibitions, with a strong focus on the European art world. The collection has been incorporated into the main archive of the Image Collections, fine arts filed by artist, group shows by gallery, architecture by building.

    Biographical/Historical Note:

James Fitzsimmons (1919-1985), an American artist and art critic born in China, founded a magazine in 1956 devoted to the European visual arts scene. The first issue was published in November in Zurich, Switzerland, under the title "European Art This Month," but from the second issue forward the magazine was known as "Art International." It continued publication under Fitzsimmons' editorship (relocating to Lugano with the March 1963 issue) through 1984.

    Scope and Content:

The National Gallery of Art Library purchased the bulk of the "Art International" collection (c. 15,000 images) from James Fitzsimmons in 1976. It acquired additional smaller supplements of photographs in 1977, 1978, 1979, 1982, and 1983, with the collection ultimately totaling c. 23,000 black and white photographs.

Consisting of images of artists, works of art, and gallery exhibitions, the archive reflects the magazine's reportage on the contemporary art scene, with coverage that was diverse and international in scope. It has an emphasis on European and American twentieth-century art, but includes a broad range of countries and periods.

The Department of Image Collections did not receive any textual records of "Art International," or papers of James Fitzsimmons with the image archive.

    Filing Location and Arrangement:

Photographs are sorted by by period and artist name and incorporated into the artists' files in the main archive, with images of group shows filed by location and gallery in the M/C exhibition section in the main archive; architectural photographs are sorted by city and building name and filed in the architectural holdings of the main archive.
